Tezos / US Dollar Chart, XTZ/USD ()
Tezos is a blockchain platform for creating smart contracts and decentralized applications. Its protocol also helps other innovative projects and services emerge and develop. The embedded payment system operates on the tez cryptocurrency.
Project’s history started in August 2014 when crypto enthusiast L.M. Goodman wrote the Tezos White paper. Whereas, spouses Arthur and Kathleen Breitmans undertook the implementation of his ideas. A year later, Breitmans established Dynamic Ledger Solutions Inc. and hired developers to create the Tezos protocol. In September 2016, the team published the source code of the protocol and attracted investment from the Polychain Capital cryptocurrency fund.
Developers released an alpha version of the Tezos protocol in February 2017. In May, venture investor Tim Draper acquired 10% of the Dynamic Ledger Solutions stocks for $500 thousand. Then he also participated in a crowdsale, buying tokens for $1 million.
Before the crowdsale, Arthur and Kathleen Breitmans established Tezos Foundation, a nonprofit organisation, in Switzerland. They intended to use it to manage development funds. The third founder and president of the Foundation was Johann Gevers — an entrepreneur and a crypto enthusiast known for Bitcoin Association Switzerland, Digital Finance Compliance Association, and Monetas.
The project conducted the crowdsale from 1 till 13 July 2017, in the course of which it raised 65,562 BTC and 360,760 ETH (equal to $232 million). In August, developers released a testnet named ‘alphanet.’ In early October 2017, the spouses had a conflict with Mr Gevers and they decided to sue. The proceedings became public and were discussed in the community, and investors also became involved in the litigation. At the same time, regulators accused the Foundation and the company of selling unregistered securities.
The lawsuits and caution of investors did not allow the Tezos price to grow against the background of a market, where since September 2017, the hype began. Yet, from 23 November, the token began to rise in price — from 2.02 to 10.56 US dollars, which became an overall record dated 17 December.
Leaders resolved issues in February 2018 when Johann Gevers left the Tezos Foundation. The team launched a beta version on 30/06/2018, and the mainnet — on 17/09/2018, then the tokens became coins (their name was also simplified from tezzy to tez). To help other projects wishing to issue their tokens through smart contracts, the developers created the TZIP-7 token standard and the financial app interface FA1.2. In March 2020, the standard was updated to TZIP-12, and the interface to FA2.
The blockchain platform has a high level of security due to the Delegated Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm. Of course, not without the help of active participants in the distributed network and validators, which Tezos calls ‘bakers.’ Moreover, the transaction validation process is called ‘baking.’ To become a baker and make money on staking, the holder of coins must keep 8000 XTZ on deposit. Then they share the reward with voters who have delegated them their coins.
Other features of the platform that contribute to the growth of the Tezos exchange rate to the US dollar:
- almost zero commission — an average of 0.0023 US dollars per transaction;
- proprietary language for writing smart contracts called Michelson;
- support for friendly LIGO and SmartPy languages created by community members, as well as Haskell, OCaml, Pascal, Python;
- cooperation with partners from Nomadic Labs, TQ Tezos (Tocqueville Group), Truffle Suite;
- support by enthusiasts creating useful services and tools (for this the foundation rewards them with grants).
Regular users can also participate in the development of the project, offering updates that can improve the work through bakers. The decision to update the protocol is adopted collectively by the majority of bakers who are appointed by users as delegates. So that all participants can express an opinion on the need for changes to the blockchain.
Developers recommend using for XTZ coins the following wallets: AirGap, Galleon, Kukai, and ZenGo.
Tezos prediction, dynamics, and prospects
In the second half of February 2018, the price jumped from 2.57 to 4.84 USD, which could be due to the BTC reversal and the end of the war between the company and the foundation. Throughout April and May, the XTZ price steadily increased without looking at the market — from 2.75 to 5.78 USD, although there were no special reasons.
In the spring of 2019, the Tezos chart again showed an uptrend, which lasted from 1 March to 19 May. The rise in the price of the coin from 0.41 to 1.83 USD was facilitated by the first vote for updating the protocol (Athens A and Athens B), as well as the launch of the staking service for the institutional by the custodial unit of Coinbase (Tezos was the first added there). In November, the XTZ staking became available on the Coinbase exchange and the Coinbase Earn project, as well as on the SIX Swiss stock exchange (in the form of ETP). In December, support for the XTZ staking was announced by Binance and Kraken exchanges, as well as by Ledger wallet. This helped the price of the coin grow from 0.93 to 1.77 USD during the period from 5 November to 13 December.
In 2020, XTZ grew more and longer than BTC and the market as a whole. Most of the coins changed the trend on 14 February, while the XTZ did not give up for another week. From 1 January to 20 February, the price changed from 1.37 to 3.61 USD, that is, the increase was 163.5%, while BTC for the same period showed a 33.5% increase. In February, an additional stimulus to the coin was given by the launch of XTZ/USDT futures on Binance and MXC. Weiss Rating also noted Tezos’ success, praising flexible governance, true decentralization, and flawless code.
